Los Angeles Partners with Zimperium to Keep Residents Safe on Mobile

Mobile devices keep us tethered to the rest of the world. With the shift to remote work, schooling, banking, and healthcare, residents have become increasingly reliant on remote connectivity and mobile devices. Accessing digital services via mobile helps remove friction and improve residents’ quality of life. Whether at home, school, or work, mobile devices have become vital to helping individuals and communities stay connected and participate in our economy.

Today, our mobile devices know everything about us; they represent our lives digitally. And this access to sensitive information makes them a lucrative target for cybercriminals. Today phishing campaigns, fake WIFIs, and malicious apps are impersonating and abusing public and private agency brands and pandemic-related trends to victimize residents and steal their identities and information.

Digital safety is now a public safety issue.

To keep residents safe on mobile devices, LA Metro and the City of Los Angeles have partnered with Zimperium to provide a free mobile security application called LA Secure. LA Secure was built to help protect residents and visitors of Los Angeles from growing mobile threats on Android and iOS devices. Zimperium developed the app to provide residents peace of mind by giving them free access to privacy-protecting, enterprise-grade on-device protection for their mobile devices. It will help residents protect themselves and their sensitive data from malicious cyber activity on their mobile devices.

Providing a safe and secure environment for Los Angeles County’s 10 million residents to live and work is becoming just as important online as it has always been offline,” said Hilda L. Solis, Metro Board Chair and Los Angeles County Board of Supervisor to the First District. “As L.A. County continues to expand public Wi-Fi access, including on its entire fleet of Metro buses, LA Secure offers an industry-leading technology to ensure all the activity they conduct on their mobile devices remains safe, private and secure.”

A privacy-first design and layers of technical controls ensure user privacy is respected. A user’s private data never leaves the device.

Similar to NYC Secure and Michigan Secure, LA Secure empowers users by informing them of the threats they encounter as they interact with an increasingly technology-driven world. Phishing links stand no chance against LA Secure, detecting and alerting users to the danger of a malicious link sent through chat, e-mail, or text messaging. The security application also warns users if the WiFi they are trying to connect to could be compromised, revealing their personal and private information. And Android apps are scanned for potential threats, alerting users before installing any risky application from official or third-party app stores.

The City and County of Los Angeles have a responsibility to protect residents in both the physical and the digital realms – and it’s a responsibility we take very seriously,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “Through LA Secure, we’re making good on that commitment and empowering people with the resources they need to stay safe online.”

With the launch of LA Secure, Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Los Angeles Metro CEO, Stephanie Wiggins take another step towards digital equity and bridging the digital divide.

“We are excited to offer the gift of online security to our customers this holiday season. We see LA Secure as another opportunity to provide greater access and equity for our transit customers, many of whom are low-income, do not have their own access to Internet services and depend greatly on public Wi-Fi services,” said Metro CEO Stephanie N. Wiggins. “We believe everyone deserves to have a secure online experience on our system and look forward to promoting privacy protections available through this important program.”
